1. Welcome and plenary session
Upon arriving at the Milan offices, we were welcomed for an introductory plenary session. The presentation immediately immersed us in Bain’s culture and mindset, giving us the opportunity to understand their core values and the tangible impact their teams generate every day in the market.
2. Recruiting simulation: Business Case and Market Sizing
The true heart of the visit was putting ourselves to the test with what both intimidates and fascinates those who want to enter this world. We were able to experience, in practice, what a consultant actually does through two specific exercises.
- Business Case: we worked on finding the best solutions to reduce the operating costs of a multinational company by 10%. This activity allowed us to:
- structure the problem rigorously through logical frameworks;
- analyze complex data and interpret charts to isolate the real inefficiencies;
- calculate the economic impact of the possible solutions;
- synthesize the full analysis into a final strategic recommendation, following the typical top-down approach.
- Market Sizing: a mental logic exercise used in the day-to-day work of a strategy consultant. We were asked to estimate the market for a household item in North Africa: a challenging exercise with no certain data, essential for testing critical reasoning in the face of ambiguity.
3. Mentorship and unfiltered Q&A
Throughout the event, we were supported by Associate Consultants: young professionals already working in highly challenging environments. A long open Q&A session allowed us to explore their daily work, from how time is allocated across projects, to the steep learning curve, and internal and external career prospects.
4. Networking aperitivo
The day ended with a fantastic aperitivo organized directly inside the offices. It was a golden opportunity to step away from formality, exchange LinkedIn contacts, ask for personalized advice on how to prepare for interviews, and experience the atmosphere of corporate life.
